Leland Snow Park. Strawberry, California. First post for the new year (though the photo was taken two weeks ago :-). This is the scene near the lodge where me, the family and some friends spent the day sledding. So what's up with the treatment? Found some spare time yesterday and decided to download a demo copy of PhotoShop and see if I can figure it out. When they say that the learning curve for PS is very steep I think they meant that you actually need an advance degree in color engineering.. it is so complicated! In only a few minutes I was able to decide not to shell out $700 for PS. But I really wanted a full-fledge photo editing software, so I downloaded a free alternative to PS called GIMP. It has similar features as PS and also as complicated. Played around a bit and this image is what came out.. I may have totally butchered a decent photo but hey, it's part of the learning process :-) I'll probably go back to just using Picasa for now since learning either PS or GIMP seems to take a very looooong time.. eventually I'll get there (even if it takes me the whole year to learn it) and at least I have something new to learn for 2008.. :-)

Probably my most ambitious piece of photo-editing yet (I'm usually extra lazy and just whizz the curves around and leave it!) but I downloaded GIMP as the only non-mac computer in the house has died, and that was the one with photoshop. But it's been a blessing in disguise because I love the new software, and it's free! Had a lot of help here - used this fantastic tutorial: browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&.. And pimped my bokeh with one of these fantastic textures: browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&..
gimp photo editing software, free download
The GIMP, an image editor whose power and ease-of-use rivals that of Adobe Photoshop, is one of the world's most popular free software projects. Artists and designers have relied on the GIMP since 1995 to retouch photographs, composite multiple images, and create new artwork from scratch.
The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects shows you how to harness the GIMP's powerful features to produce professional-looking advertisements, impressive photographic effects, as well as logos and text effects. And author Michael J. Hammel, who has used the GIMP since its first public release, won't mince words or waste your time. His extensively illustrated, step-by-step tutorials are perfect for hands-on learning and experimentation. After a crash course in using the GIMP's interface and core tools (such as brushes, patterns, selections, layers, modes, and masks), you'll learn:
Photographic techniques to simulate ripped edges, create sepia-toned antique images, swap colors, produce motion blurs, alter depth of field, and even fix rips in an old photo Web design techniques to create tiled patterns, navigation tabs, rollovers, and fancy buttons and borders Type effects to create depth, perspective shadows, metallic and distressed text, and neon and graffiti lettering Advertising effects to produce movie posters and package designs; simulate clouds, cracks, cloth, and underwater effects; and create specialized lighting Interface design tips for creating textures, navigation bars, and buttons
Whether you're new to the GIMP or you've been playing with this powerful software for years, The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects is sure to teach you some new tricks.
